Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBM)

This institute was created in 1997. It is designed to conduct cutting-edge research in fields of interest both from a national and international perspective, for example neurosciences, genomics and bioinformatics, adaptation to the environment, signal transduction, developmental biology, and infectiology.

Unique in Chile, the ICBM relies on 240 professors. In addition to conducting research on the main health-related problems of our modern societies, they also give classes to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The great majority of its professors are doctoral and postdoctoral research scientists carrying out more than 50 Fondecyt projects, three Fondef projects, another on behalf of the Fondap Centre y two more for Núcleos Milenio.

Fields of study

Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Physiology and Biophysics, Human Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology and Mycology, Developmental Anatomy and Biology, Physiopathology and Virology ICBM's policies stimulate collaboration between these different fields of study in all academic tasks.

Collaboration with this institute can also be seen regarding other relevant biomedical issues, such as: Neurobiology, Epidemiology of Infections prevalent in Chile, Membrane Biology and Signal Transduction, Toxicology and the Environment, Hypoxia and Ischemia Pathology, Chagas disease, Physiology under Extreme Conditions, Functional Genomics, Cancer, Bioinformatics, Ageing, Embryonic Development and Reproduction, and finally Transplants and Immunocompatibility.
